Combined NSW/Newcastle GT Club run to Wollombi
This has been my first run for approximately two months. During this time I have had the engine completely rebuilt as well as the carby. But more importantly my wife gave birth to our first child. I have to say the whole experience was very rewarding and eye opening. After careful consideration we named the 05 model Cohen. He is a boy obviously. But enough of that on with the run...
I was anticipating this run to be a good one as soon as I heard about it. Apparently last year around 80 cars turned out for it. Possibly slight exaggerating but still a great turn out. The morning of the run dawned and the skies were clear. Beautiful blue. My family and I saddled up and made the trek to Newcastle to meet with the Newcastle club. Picked up a mate along the way whose phase three was not ready in time for the run so he was driving his worked wrx. Arriving at the meeting point we found a nice group of 8 GT's varying from xw's to xb's. After a brief chit chat and some brecky (for the bub) it was time to head off to Wollombi.
The road we took from Newcastle to Wollombi took us through Kurri Kurri (my home town as a youngster, go the bulldogs) and onwards through cessnock. We picked up another 5 or so GT's along the way and headed for our destination. Arriving at Wollombi to find we were the first to get there. The pub at Wollombi has a nice field behind it that was to be used for the event. Reportedly the drive way had been fixed from last year. I gotta say if that driveway was the fixed version I'd hate to have seen last years. Anyway all the cars lined up in mandatory reverse parking formation as we awaited the arrival of the NSW Club boys and gals. After 15 minutes or so they started arriving in packs of ten or so. All up probably around 30-40 cars turned out from that club. A very nice result. Once all the cars were in and parked in rows the mingling and photo taking began.
The day proved a great success and one of the best runs I have been on if not the best. The pub had great food albeit slightly expensive and slow to arrive. But great anyway. Everyone had a chat and spent our time admiring the cars that turned out. There was a period of grey clouds but this burned off as the morning rolled by to reveal a clear blue sky and bright sun. Eventually though the day had to end and around 2-3pm or so cars started making their departure. The owner of the pub had requested both clubs refrain from leaving any rubber on the road whilst leaving, but one person couldn't contain themselves and left a nice smokey trail after themselves as they left. I hope that doesn't damage our chances of returning there next year as it is a great run to go on in a great town.
On this run I ended up joining the NSW GT club and look forward to meeting more of its members on future runs. I hope you enjoy the pics from the day and I look forward to seeing you again next year.
